Finding git tag for a release?

Post Posted: Tue Mar 24, 2009 9:45 am

I'm a bit new to git, so sorry if this is obvious...

Looking at http://github.com/yui/yui2/tree/master, how can I find a tag or other "snapshot" that matches a given release, such as 2.6.0 or 2.7.0b? I see tags like "yui2-1454", but am not sure how these relate, if at all. I also don't see any branches other than "master".

Thanks!

Will this do?

http://yuilibrary.com/downloads/#yui2

BTW, note the "Show older files" link.

No. I'm looking for which tag or other git "snapshot" reference was used in building each of those releases.

An attempt at an analogy: http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/tomcat/tc6.0.x/tags/ would allow me to download the source for any built version of Apache Tomcat 6.x. The tag names are named after the releases, so it is really easy to match up the source with any release. I'm at a loss for how to accomplish the same thing with YUI and the git repository.

I'm aware that most of the source is practically "in" the .zip releases. However, this doesn't allow me to easily see the changes that are taking place on individual files, etc.

Okay, how about going to

http://github.com/yui/yui2/tree/master

Look for either:

(a) (In one of the menu bars) "master" "all branches" "all tags" -- mouse-over "all tags"

or

(b) (In one of the panels) "yui / yui2" "watch" [button] "download" [button] -- click the "download" button.

A window will pop-up, allowing you to select a tag.

Sorry, no. Per my original post, I found these tags, but there is no indication that I can find as to what tags match up to what release. (Does 2.7.0b = yui2-1454?)

Additionally, the "tags" feature is currently very difficult to use, as it displays a rather large, non-scrollable list of tags. Even with 1200 vertical resolution to work with, I can only see the first half of the list. Fortunately, I can use the arrow keys to scroll the browser window to see the rest. (Moving the mouse to the scroll bar causes the tag list to disappear.)

Hi,
The unusable drop down menu was one of the reasons we were avoiding pushing tags out, however there does seem to be a need for the tags to be on github, for the use case you mentioned, so we just pushed them out. We'll file a ticket with github to address the menu UI issue.

You should be able to checkout the "2.7.0" tag now.

Regards,
Satyen

p.s. A "2.6.0" equivalent tag is not in Git [ we moved to Git between 2.6.0 and 2.7.0 ].

Satyen / Dav - thank you both!

Dav - F.Y.I., your link appears to be broke.
