Changing a DD instance into a DDProxy

Hi all,
A (hopefully) quick question: I'm trying to modify the DragDrop instance that is instantiated during the creation of a draggable panel. However, after looking at the source, it appears that it's hard coded to being YAHOO.util.DD.
Is there any way, short of instantiating another object and replacing the dd property, of changing the existing instance to use a proxy?
