January Project Update

YUI 2.x project update:

There are two axes of YUI 2.x work going on right now:
  • Development: We've been saying for awhile that our next release, 2.7.0, will focus on IE8 compatibility and bug fixes. This remains the case. Our internal milestones call for a 1/23 code freeze on 2.7.0 and a release in mid February, depending on the frequency of issues that we discover post freeze. This release is meant to solidify IE8 compatibility, addressing (or, at a minimum, documenting) all known issues. We've done extensive testing with the last two IE partner builds, and we believe that 2.7.0 will be be a solid release for IE8. There is a possibility that Microsoft will release an RC for IE8 after the 2.7.0 code freeze but prior to release. If this happens, we'll retest with the RC; if there are significant new issues, we will consider unfreezing to address them, which would result in a delay of 2-3 weeks in the 2.7.0 release date. We don't expect to be releasing new components as part of the 2.7.0 release. A number of components, notably Element and Selector, will come out of beta with this release.
  • Community: YUI Doc was released on GitHub at the end of last year, and we're working to move all of our source code there. We opted to restructure our code directories prior to moving code out for you on GitHub, and that's why it's not out there today -- we're just finishing up that process (for both 2.x and 3.x). This seemed like a better choice than putting the source out there and then redoing our directories shortly thereafter, but it did slow down the process a little. Once we have our source directories on GitHub, you'll be able to follow development in the head. At that point, we'll be working to clean up our component build process for your use (so you can modify, rebuild, and test components) and to get our docs and examples included in the source in a way that allows you to participate in the project on that level as well.
I expect that by the time we complete 2.7.0 we will also have migrated our bug tracking from SourceForge to Git (for YUI 2.x and YUI 3.x). George and Dav will have information on that when the transition happens and you'll see updates on that here and in the YUI 3.x forum.

Happy new year from all of us here -- please let me know if you have roadmap questions that I haven't answered here or if you need more details on any of these topics.

Thanks for the update. Are you guys seeing 2.7.x being the last major release on the YUI 2.x code?

Also any update when we should expect the next release of the YUI 3.x code?

Eric -- No. Once we have the full source and build tools available on GitHub, there will be a chance for the 2.x codeline to evolve with contributions from outside the YUI Team. A good example of this is Satyam's Progress Bar widget -- it's all ready to go, but because we don't have the tools available to him it's inconvenient to get that into a release. I see that control, and a few others, as likely 2.8.0 candidates.

The YUI team here will continue to do work on 2.x as well, although much less as we focus on 3.x. We'll continue to maintain the core components, respond to new browser developments, and in some cases port upgrades from 3.x back into the 2.x line.

I'll post an update on this in a few days in the 3.x forum. Our priority is to get the source to you on GitHub so you can stay in touch with the project head as we work. Beyond that, the next release will be beta 1. I'll provide you with our projected date for that release when I do the 3.x update later this week.
